A new Venezuelan-inspired restaurant, Luna Latin Cuisine, recently opened in the Avondale neighborhood! At Luna, you’ll experience a new world of flavors from their delicious Latin American comfort food. Pabellon (shredded beef, black beans, rice and plantains) Tostones (fried green plantains topped w/ slaw, avocado and Queso Fresco) Luna is based on Venezuelan cuisine, which is diverse, complex and influenced by its European (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and French), West African and Native American traditions. Venezuelan cuisine varies greatly from one region to another but regardless of the region, it’s the equivalent of good ole comfort food. Food staples include corn, rice, plantain, yams, beans and several marinated meats. A Word From the Owner Rom Mendez, owner-operator of the Cantina on Wheels food trucks, is at the helm of the new culinary venture. The restaurant is located in the old firehouse building on 2nd Avenue South across the street from Avondale Brewing Company. Talk about convenience! “I am glad to have the opportunity to share with Birmingham, a city that has given me so much over the years, the flavorful Latin American foods I grew up enjoying in Venezuela,” said Mendez.
